What is an Attestation Officer
A remote online attestation officer is an experienced notary. They may already have a Remote Online Notary certification or can become one. The Attestation Officer, AO, conducts attestation sessions to confirm the identity of an individual (affiant) using remote, online methods rather than requiring physical presence.
The responsibilities of a RON AO is similar to those of a traditional attestation officer, including:
- Verifying the identity of individuals involved in an identity attestation transaction.
- Witnessing the signing of documents through video conferencing or other remote methods.
- Affixing their electronic signature or seal to attest to the authenticity of the documents.
- Maintaining records of attested documents following legal requirements.
- Performing other notarial acts for domestic and international transactions
Attestation Officers must complete a training course consisting of authenticity concepts and the CAO Attestation Processes.
AOs play a crucial role in enabling remote identity attestation based on the evidence of identity documents presented. They offer convenience and flexibility to businesses and affiants establish the identity of new employees or contractors who need access to the organization’s network.
Attestation Officer Qualifications
Attestation Officers must first have 3-5 years of Notary experience and be able to become a RON Notary for the Commonwealth of VA. Other states are being considered as different states have different regulations, but Virginia RON notaries can perform Remote Online Notary procedures anywhere in the world.
Attestation Officer candidates will need to take the Attestation Officer Certification program offered through CAO. This certification program is structured to explain the concepts of authenticity and the importance of establishing accountability through measurably reliable identities.
